The Subsidy Program AFIF

The EU subsidy program AFIF (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility) promotes the Europe wide expansion of infrastructure for sustainable freight transport across Europe along the so-called Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). In its second phase (2024-2025), it supports the implementation of the goals of the AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) with one billion euros.

Which projects are funded?

The current call by the European Commission under AFIF pertains to the expansion of infrastructure for alternative fuels in various transport sectors (including road, maritime, and air transport).

M3E handles the application process for the road transport sector. 

The following project items are funded in this area:

  • Construction of high-power charging stations
  • Construction of hydrogen filling stations
  • Megawatt charging stations for heavy commercial vehicles

What are the project requirements?

AFIF specifically funds projects that are ready for implementation.

The funding program is designed as a co-financing instrument, which requires that 10% of the eligible project costs must be financed either by an implementing partner (2/3 of the budget) or a by public/private financial institution within the European Union (1/3 of the budget).

Another requirement is the granted financing approval from the same implementing partner or the same public/private financial institution within the EU.

The additional requirements are as follows:

  • A minimum grant requested of 2 million euros for projects with a fixed amount.
  • A minimum grant requested of €1 million for projects with a co-financing rate.
  • Completion of the project within 39 months of the application deadline.

How high are the funding amounts?

The fixed amount of funding ranges from €20,000-60,000 per charging point, depending on the type of charging point.

The co-financing funding can cover up 30-70% of the eligible costs.

Deadlines

Applications for this call can be submitted on three different deadlines:

The first deadline is September 24, 2024.

The second deadline is June 11, 2025.

The third deadline is December 7, 2025.
